Cardiac Rehabilitation

A Stronger, Healthier Future

After a heart attack, learning to rebuild cardiovascular strength is vital. The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Susan B. Allen offers outpatient prescribed exercise sessions and cardiac risk factor modification through education. The program is designed to limit the physiological and psychological effects of cardiac illness and to control cardiac symptoms.

This closely monitored phase is typically six to 12 weeks and is held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Do You Qualify for Cardiac Rehab Services?

At Susan B. Allen, our cardiac rehabilitation services are reserved for those patients with a physician referral, and a history of one or more of the following conditions:

  • Physician referral required
  • Post myocardial infarction within 12 months
  • Stable angina pectoris
  • Coronary artery bypass grafting
  • Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (Blue Cross/Blue Shield only)
  • Cardiac valve surgery (by individual consideration)

Education and Exercise

Educational sessions for cardiac rehabilitation include the following topics: anatomy and physiology, risk factors, nutrition, pharmacology, exercise training, stress management, and home recommendations.

An exercise prescription is provided by the medical director, then an individualized training program is developed. It includes a warm-up phase, and aerobic exercise and strength training. Your heart rhythm, blood pressure, pulse, oxygen requirements and other data are monitored.
